Wow what a winter. I had gotten on the water last week catching 5 stripers up to 6 pounds but that day was nothing compared to today. I caught at least 12 stripers up to 10 pounds. Missed I don't know how many more, 4 times I had 2 stripers on at once. I had called a buddy of mine to go with me and sure wish I would have had his help. I am sure we would have gotten many more stripers to the boat with his assistance.
I am fishing my normal early spring method and all the fish are coming out of 2 to 4 feet of water. The day mentioned above I was using bucktails only since I didn't have any bait. I managed to come up with some bait the next day but the fish just weren't hitting like the day before, I only got 4 to the boat up to 6 pounds still not a bad day but allot slower than the day before.
The water temp is in the low 40s so once it warms alittle more things should really begin to happen. My goal this year is for a 30 pounder, and I expect to catch a bunch between 15 and 25.

It was a fantastic day to be on the water today and the fish agreed. The stripers were short hitting allot but we still managed to get 9 stripers to the boat with a 20# as the largest. We missed at least twice that many more. We were pulling live bait, shad and black saltys in shallow water, 3 to 7 feet in the backs of coves on the upper end of the lake. Looks like the bigger stripers are going to make a good showing this year! By the way both these stripers were released to grow and fight another day, we kept a few smaller fish for the skillet.

I finally got on the water today and found the stripers to be willing and aggressive. With in 10 minutes of putting out lines we had the first striper in the boat. While the stripers today were not as large as I would like, between 5 and 8 lbs, will still had a great time and caught allot of fish. We were fishing live bait, black salty's and bucktails on planer boards in 7 to 3 feet of water!Lots of bank fishermen out today, we also say several of them catching stripers. The stripers are in there normal early spring pattern in the backs of the creeks, coves and river where the water is a little warmer. It looks like it is going to be a great spring!

Sept 23, 2004 Many people have requested fishing reports this year and quite honestly since mid spring the fishing has been so unpredictable that it is hard to report what is going on! Every fish I have put in the boat this year has came at a price, hard work and persistence. I have seen Wilson go thru years like this before and next year will be totally different I am sure. With the crazy weather, constant wind shifts and high winds it has just been a tough year to produce stripers with any consistency. Now for the good news !!!!!!!
With the cooling water temps. the bigger stripers are starting on the move and hitting hard. From the Dam to Lucas seems to be producing the best. I have been out of town the last few days fishing a tournament so that's the best report I can give since I haven't been on the water and my info. comes from the local grapevine which I have several contacts. I have heard of stripers from 14 to 20 pounds being caught this last week which is enough to get me excited!!!
Team Madd Jack, Captain Madd Jack with wife Gina Hoskinson are leading the National Striped Bass Assoc. Lady Angler of the Year for the Nation. This year on our tournament trail we have won the Lake Skiatook Oklahoma 2 times also winning the Skiatook Divisional Title. Gina has won Lady Angler of the tournament 5 times this year. Last weekend we won day two of the Lake Milford Kansas tournament which also won us the Kansas State Champions Title for 2004. We are also tied for the Divisional title for Lake Wilson, Kansas!
We are also currently the 3rd place team in the 5 state region 3 which includes Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana. There was one tournament in Arkansas that we could not attend but had we made it and not even weighed in a striper we would be number ONE in the region by a large margin, ain't that the luck!Soon we will be traveling to Arkansas to fish the Regionals and then on the Tennesee for the Nationals, personally I think it would be great a Kansas team to win both and believe me we will work hard and do our best!
The first full week in October Madd Jack will be guiding out of a new boat. I have purchased a new 21 foot Sylvan from Inland Marine in Hutchinson. This will give me more room for my guest and while my old boat was great this one will have more comfortable features and more fishing fighting area. So be the first to book a trip on my new rig! Call 620-727-3383 if you are the first to call and say Sylvan Boats I will give you 10% off your trip.
The photos below are of my darling wife with two of her winning fish. One at Lake Skiatook and the other Lake Milford, FISHON gotta go!1

I haven't posted a report for some time as I had been waiting to catch some bigger fish. We didn't catch allot today but did catch this 27 # striper fishing live bait in shallow water in the upper end of Wilson. The last few days I had been pulling a few stripers from this same area and had a client loose another big fish a couple days ago. All the fish I have been catching are in 6 feet of water or less. So sharpen your hooks, change your line the big boys are on the move, Good Luck, Madd Jack
March 1 2004 The last few day or so since ice off the stripers have been being caught mostly by the wader fisherman, throwing bucktails on the windblown points. I haven't seen or heard of anything over 8 lbs.but the season is beginning and you don't have to drill thru 10 inches of ice to go fishing. I have been wanting to get my boat in but the wind seems to be blowing constantly over 20 MPH which doesn't make for a fun day. So far today we have had about 1/2 inch of rain and more is forecast so this should really spark the fish into feeding. With the creeks and rivers flowing fresh water into the lake I can't wait to go. Good Luck, 2004 should be the best striper year we have had for along time, Madd Jack

Feb 23, 2004 Ice off fishing. After having some of the best ice we have had for several years combined with the slowest ice fishing I have seen in along time I for one am ready to put the boat in and catch some STRIPERS! The time between ice off and the 50 degree water temp. can be a very testing time but a great time to catch trophy stripers and lots of schoolies too. Of course spring in Kansas can be tough to fish with constant fronts moving thru and the winds that keep the kite flyers happy. But if you pick your days the fishing is awesome. Last year right after ice off I caught several hundred stripers during a 4 week time frame with the majority of those caught during 5 days when the fishing was the hottest. Of course living on the lake has it's advantages but here is how I pick my days. I mostly fish prior to an incoming front, preferably after a few sunny days to warm up the shallow water and give the bait and fish a chance to move into these areas, creeks, coves, rivers. I run the lake with an eye on my temperature gauge looking for that warmer water. Most of the time these stripers will be shallow, I have seen them so shallow that I almost overlooked them thinking they were carp with there backs out of the water, but on a second look I saw stripes and boy did I have fun. 10 feet or less is usually the case, also fishing this shallow requires patience and no noise that will spook them. Since the fish are so shallow this is one time you can't depend on your depth finder to find fish as the stripers will simply move out from under your boat before you get a chance to read them. However the bait fish aren't quit as spooky and there presence is usually a good sign that the stripers are nearby. I for one am a hardcore bait fisherman but after ice off the bait can be hard to come by but I have great success throwing bucktail into the above mentioned areas again be patient and try different retrieve speeds until you find what the fish want. I bet in the next few days the wader fisherman will be out in force and don't be surprise if they are catching more than you are as wader fishing for striper early in the year produces some excellent catches. With cold water temps. and everyone in a hurry to get on the water don't overlook your boat as this is no time to be broke down. Make sure your batteries are fully charged, your fuel is in good condition, all safety equipment is up to speed, check those trailer bearings too. 2004 should be one of the best striper years in along time, I am ready are you? Madd Jack

Feb. 7, 2004 Hi All, I was fortunate enough to get invited to a video shoot in North Carolina, We fished 2 days with the first day producing 70 14# to 17 # Blue Fish with only 4 stripers caught the first day, the largest 24# . The second day the wind shifted and grew to 33 MPH with 8 to 15 foot seas, pretty rough for this old Kansas Boy. We still managed 50 stripers with 32# being the largest, releasing 40 stripers over 20#.Our Captain Shannon Miller of the Blood Vessel http://www.bloodvesselsportfishing.com/ was very disappoint with the catch but we had a ball, our Captain did a fantastic job keeping us on the fish despite the rough seas! The next day he took a charter out on calm seas and caught over 120 stripers with 35# as the largest which is a slightly above average day for one of his trips.
I have fished stripers most of my adult life and must say if you haven't fished this area for stripers you just haven't truly fish for stripers. For more info go the Capts. website, the season is Nov-Feb with the peak in January. You can bet Madd Jack will be there sometime next January, Fish-ON
